Case Study
NHS Lanarkshire by Agnes Robb - Training Manager External Programmes

NHS Lanarkshire has been working in partnership with Coatbridge College to provide a Minute Taking Skills programme. This programme was designed by Coatbridge College to meet the specific needs identified by NHS Lanarkshire staff.
The programme provided the participants with new or updated skills enabling staff to adjust to changing and expanding roles within the department/organisation.
To date over 200 staff have attended this ½ day programme, which has been provided onsite by Coatbridge College in training centres across NHS Lanarkshire at Law House, Hairmyres Hospital and Wishaw General Hospital, ensuring that all staff have equity of access to the training programme. The programme provides staff with core skills in minute taking including the characteristics of good minutes and effective listening skills. Due to the success and demand further Minute Taking Skills programmes will be commissioned with Coatbridge College during 2008.
In January 2008 the College commenced a 20-week Medical Terminology programme specifically designed to meet the needs identified by NHS Lanarkshire. This programme is currently being delivered by the college onsite at Wishaw General Hospital.
Coatbridge College works very much in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire and recognises the needs of the staff, budget and the constraints of working with a large organisation. The partnership between NHS Lanarkshire and Coatbridge College will continue to expand, develop and deliver further programmes in the future.
beCogent, by Colin Watson- Training Manager
beCogent is a company which is passionate about developing its people. A team of professionally qualified in-house trainers is supplemented by a small number of external training providers. These external providers are chosen because of their subject matter expertise, but also because of their understanding of our business objectives and ability to fit with our values and culture.
beCogent is pleased to have worked with Coatbridge College on a number of projects; these have included class-room based training sessions for new and existing managers, workshops for call-handlers and coaching sessions.
Before each session, Coatbridge College worked with us to understand the objectives for the session and to design a learning intervention which would achieve business and personal development goals in an interactive, engaging and inspiring way.
Each intervention allowed the delegates to achieve and apply their learning objectives - one of the key objectives of the sessions was that delegates are equipped to apply their learning in their day-to-day work and the content and delivery methods were structured in such a way as to facilitate this.
I have to admit to having some initial reservations about the ability of a college to fully appreciate the needs and pressures of a fast-moving business, but am pleased to say that Coatbridge College have surpassed my expectations - everyone we have worked with has demonstrated an outstanding ability to share their expertise as well as a real understanding of our business, values, culture, clients and people.
